This workshop brings together scholars from Aston University in Law, International Relations, and History with practitioners to take stock of the deepening crisis of liberal democracy and international conflict management. It asks how and why the UN, the international criminal court, and humanitarian organisations have become such marginal players, to the point where states and their armies not only routinely ignore but actively oppose and attack them. It explores what role other international and regional organisations, such as NATO, the EU, or ASEAN can play in stabilising international politics. And it discusses how academics and practitioners can work together to place international relations, human rights, and global governance on a fairer, more sustainable, and more peaceful footing.
