    Personal profile

    Biography

Dr Muhammad Azmat is a Lecturer in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Aston University, UK, where he also serves as Programme Director for MSc Supply Chain Management and MSc Engineering Management. He is a Fellow of Advance HE and brings over a decade of international experience across the UK, Europe, and Asia, working at the intersection of supply chain management, digital transformation, sustainability, transport innovation, and industry engagement.

His work focuses on bridging the gap between academic knowledge on digital technologies in supply chain management and their practical application in industry. He is particularly interested in how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT, big data analytics, digital twins, autonomous systems, drones, and smart logistics solutions can improve supply chain resilience, transparency, efficiency, sustainability, and Net Zero readiness.

Dr Azmat holds a PhD and MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management from Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria, and an MBA in Supply Chain Management. He is also an alumnus of the Oxford Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford’s Transport Studies Unit, where he completed specialist training on global challenges in transport, infrastructure, development, finance, health, and wellbeing.

His research and applied work span digitally enabled supply chains, sustainable and circular supply chains, Logistics 4.0/5.0, Scope 3 emissions, SME Net Zero capability, humanitarian logistics, smart warehouses, sustainable fashion supply chains, pharmaceutical supply chains, post-disaster reconstruction, and logistics challenges in emerging economies. He has contributed to funded research, consultancy, and knowledge exchange projects with public agencies, infrastructure organisations, industry partners, technology start-ups, and not-for-profit institutions across Europe and beyond.

Alongside his research, Dr Azmat is actively involved in postgraduate teaching, doctoral and dissertation supervision, programme leadership, accreditation, industry training, advisory work, and public engagement. He has delivered invited talks, keynote sessions, media commentary, and professional training on digital supply chains, disruptive technologies, cyber-secure supply chains, drones, digital twins, humanitarian logistics, and Net Zero transformation. Through his academic, advisory, and industry-facing work, he aims to develop knowledge that is intellectually rigorous, practically relevant, and capable of helping organisations navigate complex supply chain challenges in an increasingly digital, uncertain, and sustainability-driven world.

    PhD Supervision

I am available for PhD supervision in the following areas:

    1. Digital and AI-Enabled Supply Chain Transformation

Research on how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, IoT, digital twins, big data analytics, and autonomous systems can improve supply chain visibility, resilience, decision-making, efficiency, and industry competitiveness.

    2. Sustainable, Circular and Net Zero Supply Chains

Research focused on digitally enabled sustainability transitions, including Scope 3 emissions, SME Net Zero readiness, circular supply chains, sustainable logistics, ESG practices, and the role of technology in supporting decarbonisation and responsible supply chain management.

    3. Humanitarian Logistics, Supply Chain Resilience and Technology for Good

Research exploring how drones, autonomous vehicles, digital platforms, data-driven tools, and smart logistics solutions can strengthen humanitarian operations, disaster response, post-disaster reconstruction, supply chain preparedness, and resilience in vulnerable or uncertain contexts.
