Biography

Dr Waksh Awais is a Lecturer in Accounting at Aston University, based in Aston Business School. He is a critical accounting scholar with an established publication record in leading international journals, including Critical Perspectives on Accounting and Accounting Forum. He holds a PhD in Accounting from the University of Kent and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

His research examines accounting in its socio-political and cultural contexts, with particular emphasis on neocolonialism in accounting education, gender inequalities in the accountancy profession, and the role of accounting in reproducing or challenging social inequalities. His work on accounting education in Pakistan adopts a Gramscian theoretical framework to bring together the perspectives of students, educators, and policymakers, highlighting the enduring legacies of British colonialism in contemporary accounting education.

Waksh has over five years’ experience teaching accounting and finance at undergraduate, postgraduate, and MBA levels across several UK institutions including Sheffield Hallam University, University of Arts London and University of Kent. His teaching is informed by critical pedagogy and active learning approaches.

Awards

Waksh has presented his research at national and international conferences. His paper: ‘I am no longer part of this rat race’:Student resistance to neoliberal accounting education in Pakistan was awarded the Best Doctoral paper award at British Accounting and Finance Association Workshop on Accounting and Finance in Emerging Economies in 2023. 

Funding Applications and Awards

Waksh has secured competitive research funding. In 2026, he was awarded the Research and Enterprise Participatory Research Fund at Aston University for the project “Wearing Identity at Work: Hijabi Accountants in the Big Four in the UK”.
