Biography
During the period 1989-2000, I worked in different governmental institutions and business organisations in Mexico. In the Directorate of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic, as Deputy Director of Documentation; in Airports and Auxiliary Services, as Advisor to the Deputy Director of Operations; in PEMEX Gas and Basic Petrochemicals, as General Superintendent of Natural Gas Sales, and in the Ministry of the Interior (i.e., Secretaría de Gobernación) Ministry of the Interior, as Advisor to the Minister (i.e., Secretario). I also collaborated in the following private companies: Consultores y Promotores Asociados, S.C. as Associate; in Desarrolladora Metropolitana, S.A. of C.V. as Personal Secretary to the CEO, and in Tribasa Group, as the Evaluation Advisor to the International Vice President.
Concerning academia, in the period 1996-2011 at different campuses of Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), I progressed from part-time Lecture to Associate Professor, playing the roles of Dean of Higher Education, Head of the Engineering Programme, Member of the Strategic Committee, and National Coordinator for the Systems Thinking area in the BSc of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Afterwards, during the period 2011-2020 at University of Lincoln I collaborated as Associate Professor in Operations and Logistics Management, Programme Leader MSc Logistics and Global Operations, Coordinator of the Challenge-Based Learning Special Interest Group, Coordinator of the UoL4.0 Challenge 2018-2019, Member of the Digital Lincoln Award, and Member of the Industrial Digitalisation Steering Group, a multi-college entity focused on building opportunities for all students to recognise the interdisciplinary nature and broad economic impact of digitalisation.
I joined Aston in June 2020, at the start of the COVID pandemic, as a Senior Teaching Fellow. I am currently playing the role of Deputy Head in the Operations and Service Management Department, and was participating as Convenor for Public Engagement in the OIM department, and a member of the Standing Committee of the Academic Assembly. I am actively engaged in developing innovative Active Learning approaches for Authentic Assessment, and have implemented several initiatives in all the modules I deliver (i.e., Apprenticeships, ABS and APEC; Exec MBA; online MBA, and online MSc Business and Management). These initiatives have been externally awarded and reported in academic publications.
I have also developed and maintained international links with universities and professional organizations worldwide, with emphasis on Latin America. Consequently, I collaborate with networks in academic and professional institutions and businesses in Bolivia, Colombia, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Spain, the UK, and the US, where I develop projects and deliver conferences and short courses.
Research Interests
My research focuses on how to improve individual and collective performance, in those cases where the alignment of aims and preferences is unattainable, undesirable, nonessential or even unnecessary. I am currently studying the development of sustainable communities of micro-producers, so that they are more resistant to global and / or local logistical challenges. For instance, I am working with different colleagues in Mexico, Peru, the UK and US on the impact of nanostores in the last-mile, and the contributions of Systems Thinking approaches to the design and management of (alternative) food supply chains. Therefore, I am exploring different human and technological interfaces, within different supply arrangements, that may increase the propensity of individuals to collaborate. In short, my current research is at the intersection of issues such as human performance, technology and sustainable operations.
