Personal profile

General

I was appointed as Professor Cardiology at Aston Medical School in 2014. I am Clinical Director of Aston Medical Research Institute. I am also a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust, based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

My clinical expertise is in cardiac device therapy (cardiac resynchronisation therapy, pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators), heart failure and cardiomyopathies. I also specialise in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (cardiac MRI). I am past President of the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (BSCMR). I have been a clinical advisor to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) on the national guidelines for Heart Failure, Cardiac Devices and Drug Therapy. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and past Chair of the Health Economics Group and Advocacy Chair of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA).

Research Interests

My research interests include: cardiac device therapy (cardiac resynchronisation therapy, pacemakers and defibrillators), cardiomyopathies and heart failure; cardiovascular photonics; and, clinical outcomes research. These research programmes are undertaken at Aston Medical School and at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
