Biography
Professor Wong holds the Regius Chair in Pharmacy at Aston University in England, a position established by the late Queen Elizabeth II to mark her 90th birthday.
Professor Wong is also a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, University of Hong Kong. He held the Lo Shiu Kwan Kan Po Ling Endowed Professorship in Pharmacy and served as the Head of the Department of University of Hong Kong from 2018 to 2024. He was previously the Head and Professor of the Research Department of Practice and Policy at the UCL School of Pharmacy (2015-2018).
He has over 700 peer-reviewed papers published in prominent journals, including Nature portfolio journals, JAMA Network Journals, Lancet family journals, and BMJ journals. He was cited among the top 1% of scholars in Clarivate Analytics' Essential Science Indicators for ten consecutive years between 2015 and 2024. He has secured over £48 million in research grants as the principal applicant and approximately £200 million as a co-applicant in Europe and Hong Kong from the Medical Research Council in the UK, National Institute of Health and Care Research in England, European Commission, Hong Kong Research Grants Council, Hong Kong Health and Medical Research Fund, and pharmaceutical companies.
His expertise lies in using healthcare big data research to investigate the safety and optimal use of medications for treating various conditions, specifically neurological and psychological conditions. With support from the Hong Kong Government InnoHK programme, Professor Wong and his team at the University of Hong Kong established a spin-off company, Advanced Data Analytics for Medical Science (ADAMS). ADAMS applies advanced data analytical techniques and unique healthcare databases from Hong Kong and other countries to conduct research and develop new products for pharmaceutical companies, care providers, and regulatory authorities to enhance the competitiveness of Hong Kong biomedical research.
His previous spin-off company (Therakind) from University College London (UCL) and the current spin-off company from the University of Hong Kong (OCUS Innovation) have developed several licensed prescription-only paediatric medicines in Europe and Hong Kong that are widely used by children. In recognition of his contributions to medicines for children, he was awarded an honorary fellowship by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.
Professor Wong has received various awards and fellowships for his work in medicines for children and vaccine safety. He was awarded the Medal of Orator on Child Health of the Hong Kong Paediatric Society in 2022, the Chemist and Druggist Pharmacy Practice Research Conference Medal from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 2004. He is the only pharmacist to have received a UK Department of Health Public Health Career Scientist Award in 2002. He was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the College of Pharmacy Practice in Hong Kong in 2013, and a Fellowship from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in 2013. Professor Wong was commissioned by the Hong Kong SAR Government to monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines and received commendation from the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2022.
Professor Wong has advised the Departments of Health in England and Hong Kong, the World Health Organization, the European Medicines Agency, and the pharmaceutical industry. Professor Wong was the Vice-President of the International Society of Pharmacovigilance between 2016 and 2019. He has also been an expert witness for many legal cases in the UK and Hong Kong regarding medication safety.
