Research Interests

My primary research interest is in how accounting information is used in both the public sector and not-for-profit sector to both discharge accountability and to assist decision-making. I am particulalry interested in exploring the differing needs for accounting information and external repoting between the sectors.

A secondary research interest is in understanding the reasons that women are poorly represented in senior executive and board positions in the private sector.

Teaching Activity

I have taught extenively across all levels of financial accounting from introductory modules to advanced modules. I have very frequently been module leader for these modules. I have been responsible for the redesign of existing modules as well as the design and implemeentation of new modules. I have also taught in Auditing.

I was the honours co-ordinator responsible for the honours programme at QUT. 

I have supervised students to successful completion of both Masters by Research and PhD as well as several honours theses.

I served on the Audit and Risk Management committeee of the Queensland Department of Child safety for two years from 2008-2010.

I served on the Audit and Risk MAnagement Committee for Cannon Hill ANglican School fro 2012-2016

In 2020 with others I was involved in a project to Map assets in a region of Queensland to assist with their efficient utilisation. We recieved funding of $17,500 for this work.

In 2018 I was approached by the Local Government Association of Queensland to perform some research for them on  Alternative Approaches to Local Government water service provider management. I recieved funding from them of $36,400 to do this work.

In 2006 I was engaged to  Investigate Funding Models and Sustainable Costing for a peak No-For-Profit group in Queensland. I was awarded $35,000 to complete this work.

Biography

Dr. Janet Mack is an accomplished academic and professional with an extensive background in accounting and academia.

Janet earned a Ph.D. from Queensland University of Technology in 2004, investigating the use of private sector financial reporting standards in the public sector. Very little research had been carried out in this area and she was keen to advancing knowledge in this area. Prior to this, she completed a Master of Commerce (honours) degree at the University of New South Wales in 1998 and a Bachelor of Business in Accounting at the Queensland Institute of Technology in 1974. Janet also completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education in 2022.  

As an experienced Senior Lecturer at the School of Accountancy, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Janet has made significant contributions to the education and development of accounting professionals. During her time at QUT Janet was involved in teaching a wide variety of financial accounting subjects at both post graduate and undergraduate levels. Janet has also been involved in curriculum design and module development.

Janet has demonstrated a strong commitment to research. Her research interests have concentrated on investigating the utility of financial information in the public sector as well as the Not -for-profit sector. She also has an interest in corporate governance with an emphasis on board gender diversity. She has published widely in both these areas in high ranked peer reviewed journals.

Before venturing into academia, Janet gained valuable practical experience in the both the public and private sector. She served as the Financial Controller at G.E. Wilson & Assoc in Maroochydore from 1978 to 1980 and worked as an Accountant at various firms in Australia and Papua New Guinea, including Binder Hamlyn & Co, Hungerford Hancock & Offner, and the Commonwealth Audit Office.
