Karolína completed her PhD at Aston University (2021), then, worked as a 2020/2021 Mercator fellow at the Istanbul Policy Centre and recently, returned to Aston as an ESRC postdcotoral fellow. During her PhD, she was a visiting fellow at the Lebanese American University (Lebanon). Karolína’s research is at the nexus of sociology and international relations that examines the EU’s externalisation politics, transit migration, human smuggling, border security, violence and conflict. As a part of her methodological approach, Karolína lived with refugee communities in Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and (Eastern) Turkey, used daily participant observations in makeshfit camps, and conducted interviews with diverse actors living at, moving across, and managing borders. She has been also engaged in refugee aid provision and border violence monitoring with grassroot organisations (No Name Kitchen, BVMN).
