Luke joined Aston Law School in 2022 as a Senior Teaching Fellow in Law.
His previous academic appointments were at the University of Reading, the University of Oxford, and Oxford Brookes University. At Oxford Brookes he held a senior lectureship and several programme management and leadership roles.
Luke’s teaching expertise lie in the following areas: Legal Skills and Systems, Legal Methods, Land Law, Equity and Trusts, Succession Law, and Medical Law and Ethics.
At Aston Law School, Luke has taught on the following modules: Legal Systems and Skills; the Law in Applied Context; Land Law; Equity; and Wills, Probate and Private Client.
He is an experienced supervisor of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects in his teaching and research areas.
Luke also has a wealth of knowledge and experience in delivering mooting and client interviewing and has coached students for national competitions in these areas. Drawing on his experience from the Law Commission, he also designed and delivered law reform webinars and competitions.
Luke’s teaching philosophy can be summed up in one word, holistic. This means that he aims to design and deliver teaching to meet the holistic needs of students, not simply their academic needs. The overall aim is to enhance student autonomy in their education and careers.
Luke's research interests lay in legal education, in particular wellness and neurodiversity. He also undertakes wider work in teaching and learning scholarship and pedagogical research.
He is a member of two national research networks relating to his research area, namely Connecting Legal Education and Wellness in Law.
Luke has also conducted research in the field of property law, in particular the registration of title, mistake, and fraud. He has also conducted researched in elements of private client practice including succession, personal taxation, and trusts.
His areas of expertise are legal education research; legal and policy research; empirical research; law reform - especially through the mechanisms of statutory reform; law reform statutory bodies e.g. Law Commissions and Committees; and bill drafting, impact assessment and parliamentary procedures.
At Aston Luke has received student and staff based nominations and awards, including a nomination for the 2023 Vice-Chancellor's Engagement & Impact Award in the Community Engagement Award.
In 2021, he won the Oxford Brookes University Teaching Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Student Experience, in recognition of his excellence in teaching and contributions to the student experience. In the same year he was also nominated for the Best Academic Advisor and Sustainable Teaching Awards.
Luke is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds membership of the Association of Law Teachers.
In 2022 Luke was appointed to the Association of Law Teachers Executive Committee.
Before he became a legal academic and educator, Luke worked for the Law Commission for England and Wales. Whilst at the Commission he undertook detailed research and policy work on property law reform projects, including working on the following publications:
He has also worked as a freelance researcher undertaking research work for several academics and legal professionals in the areas of property law, wills, land registration and fundamental rights. Luke has also co-authored publications in these fields and worked as a researcher on the second edition of Registered Land: Law and Practice under the Land Registration Act 2002.
Luke has spent time in private practice working in the fields of conveyancing and private client.
He has been a Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Business Manager of a Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
Luke also acts as an indpendent Expert by Experience working with the NHS and private helath care sectors.

Luke holds degrees from both the University of Oxford and Oxford Brookes University.
His educational achievements have been recognised by numerous academic prizes and scholarships, including the University of Oxford HEFCE Scholarship, the Gray's Inn Tax Chamber Prize, the Lord Justice Holker Scholarship, the Sweet and Maxwell Law Prize, and the Blake Lapthorn Law Prize.
