Personal profile
Biography
Mujib is a Chartered Civil Engineer and academic leader with over twenty years’ experience across research, higher education and professional engineering practice. His career began in multidisciplinary research in the late 1990s and has since been shaped by sustained engagement with both academia and industry. This combination continues to inform his approach to leadership, research, and education, particularly in addressing societal challenges related to sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
At Aston University, Mujib has contributed to the strategic development of civil engineering. As the founding Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, he worked closely with colleagues to establish the department from a zero base and support its growth into a research-active and externally engaged academic unit. This has included strengthening academic capacity, expanding provision to support more than 650 students, and developing a balanced portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, and international programmes aligned with university priorities.
A key focus of his leadership has been the development of departmental governance, research infrastructure and culture. Drawing on experience from externally funded research and industry-led projects, he has overseen the creation of modern teaching and research laboratories, supported through external funding, industry collaboration and philanthropic contributions. He has also led to establish coherent research themes and to support early career academics and doctoral researchers in building sustainable research trajectories.
Alongside his research leadership, Mujib places strong emphasis on high-quality, research-informed teaching, promoting pedagogic approaches that integrate real-world engineering challenges, research-led content and evidence-based practice to enhance student learning and student outcomes.
His research focuses on pavement engineering, infrastructure materials and asset management, with particular emphasis on advanced material characterisation, non-destructive evaluation techniques and the performance and durability of civil infrastructure systems. Over the course of his career, he has secured and delivered more than £15 million in externally funded research and consultancy projects, reflecting sustained success in attracting competitive funding and translating research into practice.
His work has been supported by leading national and international funders, including EPSRC, the European Commission, the Department for Transport, National Highways, and industry partners, and has informed both policy and professional practice. Through a substantial body of peer-reviewed publications, doctoral supervision and service in editorial and professional leadership roles, he contributes actively to shaping research agendas at national and international levels.
Underpinning this work is a strong commitment to inclusive, values-driven leadership and to the delivery of high-impact research and education that address pressing challenges in sustainability, decarbonisation, and infrastructure resilience, in direct support of Aston University’s mission and long-term strategic objectives.
