Sayantan Biswas is a Lecturer in Optometry at Aston University. Dr Biswas has a BSc and MPhil in Optometry from the Elite School of Optometry and a PhD in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His doctoral study was on the “Evaluation of Glaucoma in Myopia”. My PhD investigated the prevalence of myopic glaucoma, the development and evaluation of a normative database for retinal nerve fibre layer thickness in Cirrus optical coherence tomography (OCT), and the longitudinal assessment of visual field and OCT associated with myopic glaucoma. He was also part of the team which developed an intracameral injection of a chemically cross-linked hydrogel to study chronic retinal degeneration in a rodent glaucoma model. Sayantan’s postdoctoral training was from the Singapore Eye Research Institute on animal models of myopia. The postdoctoral training was marked by innovative methods to investigate the interactive impact of optics and light on ocular growth, refractive error development, and choroidal, scleral, and retinal structures and targeted ocular metabolomics in a chicken model of lens-induced myopia and hyperopia. Sayantan is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), USA.
Sayantan has over 40 peer-reviewed publications and has been funded by charities and multinational organisations for his research. Dr Biswas is a member of the ARVO APMC anatomy section and an active reviewer of several optometry, ophthalmology and vision science Journals, Ethics committees and Grants bodies. His research is focused on myopia and the therapeutic effect of light. He is supervising 5 PhDs/ professional doctorates and several undergraduates.
