Biography
Zaki is an Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) NHS Foundation Trust. At Aston, he is a Clinical Associate Professor and the Founding Director of the Integrated Clinical Academic Training Programme, having led successful NIHR bids to fund Academic Clinical Fellows (24 new posts to date). Through these initiatives, Aston has become recognised as a regional hub for clinical academic career development (in medicine), working in partnership with Midlands medical schools including Birmingham, Warwick, and Keele.
He was Visiting Professor in Health and Life Sciences at Coventry University between 2017 and 2020. As a consultant he was awarded a Research Scholarship by the NIHR WM Clinical Research Network. He trained in London and Birmingham on a clinical academic track and held NIHR and European Research Council funded fellowships, completing a PhD at the University of Birmingham followed by a Clinical Lecturer post.
His portfolio spans metabolic bone and parathyroid disorders, academic training leadership and medical education research, bridging clinical medicine, translational research and educational innovation, with a focus on developing equitable, inclusive and engaging learning environments for future doctors and those in training.
He leads specialist endocrine services at UHB with specialist interests in Metabolic and Rare Bone Disease, Young Adult/Transitional Care, General Endocrinology and Internal Medicine.
He has held external roles at other Medical Schools, Post-graduate Colleges and Professional Bodies in the UK and internationally. He is a Clinical Advisor for the Royal Osteoporosis Society (ROS) and sits on the Society for Endocrinology (SfE) Corporate Liaison Committee. He sits on the steering committee of the SfE Hypoparathyroidism Registry, and is an author of their expert consensus on the Management of Endocrine Conditions at the End of Life. He is a former Editor of Osteoporosis Review, and served terms on the ROS Clinical Research Committee, the SfE Public Engagement Committee and as a Editorial Advisor for the British Medical Journal. He is the QS World Ranking Champion for Aston Medical School.
He contributed to the European Society for Endocrinology's Consensus Committee on Parathyroid disease (PARAT), and the International Taskforce on Parathyroid disease as well as participating in Delphi processes on use of biomarkers for ageing research, and Relative Energy Deficiency in Dance (RED-D). He was a co-investigator on the TOPaZ Study, the largest Randomised Trial in patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.
He has published extensively including in high impact journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, PNAS, JCI, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
He supervises PhD and MD students and NIHR Academic Clinical Fellows.
He is passionate about Medical Education, and continuous professional development - in 2025 he achieved a distinction in his MSc in Medical Education at Oxford University. He is lead for stage 5 of the MBChB Programme at Aston, and previously led year 3 of the course. His educational leadership emphasises active clinical reasoning and inclusivity in clinical training.
