Abstract

This paper conducted a review of over 190 driving cycles developed in the last decade. It was found that driving cycles had been getting more attentions in Asia and Middle East with a particular focus on public transport (PT) systems. GPS and existing bus routes were normally adopted for data collection. Micro-trip based cycle construction method was the most frequently utilised approach. Based on these findings, a cost effective approach of collecting bus vehicle speed data using the built-in GPS functions of smartphones was described, which could collect a considerable amount of speed data within a low budget while guaranteeing a good coverage of different driving conditions. The proposed methodology was applied to the franchised bus services in Hong Kong as a case study. Results showed that this approach could provide reliable and accurate PT speed data to characterise the bus driving conditions and to develop bus driving cycles.
