Abstract

To eliminate the risk of structural failure, continuous monitoring of structures is becoming increasingly desirable in the aerospace industry. Optical fiber based sensors, since they are easy to embed in structures, simple to multiplex and of small weight, are an attractive option for structural health monitoring. In this paper we propose a novel fiber Bragg grating Fabry- Perot (FBG FP) fiber sensor for the detection of acoustic emission generated by the formation of structural defects in carbon composite structures.
