Abstract
In this article, we take a look back at tenses in sports reports and address the following questions. First, we describe in a neo-Reichenbachian model the distinctive features of the PS which is allegedly favoured in sports reports (section 2). Then, given the relatively limited presence of the PS in this genre, we identify the verbal forms likely to replace it (section 3), with a particular interest for the forms in allait + INF of which Bres (2010: 59) had noted the presence in sports columns (section 4). We continue with the analysis of allait + INF forms in sports corpora and finally formulate (section 5) sociolinguistic hypotheses to account for the use of tenses in this type of text.
