Abstract

This paper explores alternative solutions for obstacle detection systems that exist currently and investigates how they can be incorporated into a freight yard. We look at several possible design solutions with the aim to advise on what type of system configurations would be best suited for each design. A “post-based” obstacle detection system and a ground-based obstacle detection system are discussed. An estimate of the potential cost of the alternative design solutions for obstacle detection in freight yards is offered, followed by our conclusions and suggestions for further developments.
