Abstract
This report assesses the readiness of Bangladesh's leather industry to undertake robust and internationally credible Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs). Recognising the increasing importance of environmental transparency, traceability, and sustainability reporting in global leather supply chains, the assessment examines whether the sector possesses the environmental data systems, monitoring infrastructure, and institutional capacity necessary to generate reliable life cycle inventories. Using the ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 LCA frameworks as the analytical benchmark, the study evaluates data availability, quality, traceability, and organisational capability across the leather value chain, with particular attention to tannery operations, wastewater management, chemical use, energy consumption, waste streams, and supply chain documentation. The assessment finds that while significant environmental data are already collected across the sector, important gaps remain in data standardisation, completeness, temporal consistency, interoperability, and traceability, limiting the immediate feasibility of conducting a comprehensive sector-wide LCA. Nevertheless, the report identifies strong foundations upon which LCA capability can be developed and proposes a practical roadmap for strengthening environmental data governance, institutional capacity, and reporting systems. By positioning LCA readiness as a strategic enabler of export competitiveness, regulatory compliance, resource efficiency, and sustainable industrial development, the report provides governments, industry, and development partners with an evidence-based framework for advancing environmental performance and supporting Bangladesh's transition towards more sustainable and internationally competitive leather value chains.
