Abstract

Studies in Audiovisual Translation have significantly increased during the last two decades. Scholarly attention has been given especially to subtitling and dubbing. Nevertheless current social conditions have created new modalities and have reshaped already existing ones. Audiodescription, subtitling for the deaf and hard-of-hearing and non-professional subtitling, among other emergent modalities are becoming an important piece of the panorama of Audiovisual Translation. This article presents a brief description of the Audiovisual Translation modalities and the relevance technological development has had on them. Taking technological progress as a key point to describe Audiovisual Translation, the possibilities offered by international communication and the accidental development of international audiences are analyzed in order to understand the advance of audiovisual translation. The resulting constant changing framework allows Audiovisual Translation to reflect on its relation to Translation Studies, the practice of translation and the industry in order to understand the current relations among producers, translators, translated material and audiences.
