Abstract

Bioenergy is the most common renewable energy worldwide making up about 70% or all primary renewable energy supply. This chapter gives an overview of the role bioenergy plays in the transition to low-carbon future and discusses its opportunities and challenges. The chapter starts with a general introduction of some of the main aspects of bioenergy, followed by some specific case studies giving an insight into specific feedstocks, technology, and applications. The focus will be on greenhouse gas emissions, wider environmental socioeconomic and sustainable implications.
