Abstract

This investigation reviewed state of the art materials ideal for the manufacturing of PEM fuel cell bipolar plates. The bipolar plate being one of the major components in the fuel cell contributes significantly to the overall performance of the cell. Most bipolar plates in the past were made up of graphite until recently when the need for other materials came to fusion. Metals and composite materials are currently commonly used material for fuel cell bipolar plates. The work discuss thoroughly progress made in the application of these materials in fuel cells and their future direction in terms of weight reduction, cost, corrosion resistance and interfacial contact resistance.
