Abstract
Through extensive direct modelling the tails of the probability density functions for marks/spaces are determined and the patterning effect in the error statistics for SMF/DCF link at 40 Gbit/s is quantified. Derived simple analytical approximations for the tails enable the error rate to be accurately predicted.
