Abstract

This study investigates the integration of synchronous and asynchronous learning technologies to support student engagement and academic outcomes in the Computer Science Mathematics (CS1MCP) module. In response to the growing role of virtual learning environments in higher education, the research evaluates how different modes of delivery influence students’ revision strategies and performance. By analysing outcomes from an online mock examination and a traditional paper-based final exam, the study examines the impact of flexible learning approaches and virtual learning communities on student success.Preliminary findings indicate that while both synchronous and asynchronous methods offer distinct benefits, asynchronous learning may provide a slight performance advantage, particularly for students seeking flexibility and self-paced study. These insights contribute to the development of more effective and inclusive teaching and assessment practices in STEM education.
