Abstract

Purpose Even though the well-being of professionals in the real estate industry has been investigated in the extant literature, there has been a dearth of studies examining this crucial matter within the context of developing countries. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors that affect the well-being of professionals within China’s real estate industry. Design/methodology/approach In total, 25 potential factors were identified and used for a questionnaire survey that yielded 101 useable responses. Subsequently, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was employed to cluster the identified factors into different dimensions. Findings Based on the identified factors, the EFA revealed seven underlying dimensions that affect the well-being of project professionals in China’s real estate industry. The dimensions, named in order of their significance, are (1) career prospects and leadership skills, (2) workplace characteristics, (3) workplace encouragements/perks, (4) workplace managerial skills, (5) workplace burdens, (6) comfortable working environment and (7) relationship with customers. Originality/value This study is among the limited attempts to examine the well-being of professionals in the real estate industry in a developing country context. The findings put forward the factors affecting the well-being of professionals in China’s real estate industry, paving the way for workplace management and the concerned regulators and policymakers to come up with appropriate interventions to improve the well-being of workers in the industry.
