Fuel consumption of a diesel engine operating in dual fuel mode diesel oil-hydrogen

Abstract

This work shows a methodology to estimate fuel consumption of a diesel power generator operating with diesel oil and hydrogen in dual fuel mode. The application of mass balance and energy balance helped to estimate the necessary hydrogen mass to replace diesel oil at a specified concentration to attend the engine load power demand. The estimated amount of hydrogen was then used to set the electronic unit that controls the gas fuel injectors. Experiments were carried out in a stationary diesel engine operating at 1800 rev/min, with varying load from 0 kW to 37.5 kW. The engine was fuelled with hydrogen concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% on energy basis. The results show a good approach between the estimated and the actual fuel consumption.
