Abstract
The authors show that the inclusion of a single phase modulator close to the midpoint of an optical fibre communication system substantially reduces the Gordon-Haus jitter of optical solitons. In a numerical example, a factor of 5 reduction is achieved in the timing variance of a 5Gbit/s, 9000km system.
