Abstract

Severe traffic congestion in urban areas in India has become a problem. Intersections are particularly important to traffic congestion because of the variety of traffic merging. To improve the traffic condition at intersections, it is necessary to properly evaluate congestion. Therefore, we modeled intersections using PTV-VISSIM. Calibration and validation were performed using data collected from video data of the Shivagi chowk vashi intersection in Mumbai. Also, in India, motorized two-wheelers (MTW) account for about one-third of the traffic volume. To reduce traffic congestion caused by MTW, exclusive MTW lanes, which are used in several East Asian countries, were implemented in the model. The average speed and the control delay were used as indicators for evaluation. The results showed that the implementation of MTW lanes had a positive effect on MTW among the vehicle types that compose the traffic. The average speed of MTW is increased by 6.0% and the control delay is reduced by 76.1%. The average speed of other vehicles other than AUTO increased and the control delay of other vehicles increased.
