Abstract

‘Design management’ as an expression was firstly coined in literature by Michael Farr in 1965. Since then, studies in this area gradually developed and further extended to other disciplines. However, there are no existing reviews to
illustrate the major discussions and issues in design management. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review of the literature in the design management field over the last 50 years: describing the main research
content through a conceptual framework proposing and generating guidance for future study. To achieve this goal, this paper reviews 144 relevant papers published between 1965 and 2017 in the SCOPUS database. In addition, this review confirms the deficiencies in the content of understanding, strategy, finance, communication and evaluation in design management research. Further research development in the above areas is needed.
