Abstract
In a number of countries, the attraction of having ‘native’ English-speaking teachers (NESTs), either because of the perceived benefit of their language skills or because of a lack of English teachers at home, has resulted in the establishment of a variety of NEST schemes. This entry will examine some of the key issues arising out of native-speaker schemes in the context of wider debates around NESTs and local English teachers (LETs). We focus specifically on how such schemes operate and the experiences of those involved. The implications for NESTs and LETs will be identified and practical suggestions provided.
