Abstract

In this chapter, the author discusses how, the use of location-based tools such as walking routes can bring the curriculum to life. The first part of the chapter discusses the creation of a self-guided walking map from its initial design and underpinning pedagogies, to its practical application in the classroom as a formative extra-curricular activity. The second part of the chapter then discusses best practice recommendations for anyone wishing to incorporate adventures outside of the formal learning spaces. For ease of reading, these reflections are grouped into four themes: the medium of the map (whether it is published physically, or virtually); when it should be followed (e.g. synchronously or asynchronously); whether any route is fixed or variable; and finally whether there are special legal considerations.
