Abstract
This chapter begins by defining style and stylistics, outlining their relationship to each other. The chapter then sets out some of the defining features of stylistic scholarship and presents an overview of developments in the field, focusing on the key areas of influence over the last forty years, and including the influence of functional and cognitive models of language. A final section discusses the dual intensive commitment that modern stylistics upholds to examining both the language of a text, and its interpretative effects on readers.
