Abstract
This paper aims to test the assumption that SCs can be seen as formal systems and that systems thinking approaches can be used to support organizations in dealing with the highly complex challenges that SC face.
In particular, the following research questions are elaborated on:
1) Do current SC definitions match a formal systems description?
2) What are the benefits and limitations of systems thinking approaches for the design and management of SC?
