Abstract

Technological advances shape education to ensure learners meet the ever-evolving real-world demand. The advent of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT has profoundly disrupted higher education. Despite academic integrity concerns, artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) offers transformative opportunities, particularly in assessment and feedback. This paper presents (i) the potential of AIEd for learners, educators, and institutions; (ii) novel assessment strategies to alleviate academic integrity concerns while empowering learners and educators to employ GenAI; (iii) a review policies inherent to GenAI in higher education; and (iv) ongoing and upcoming developments, including forthcoming Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) features, and policies associated with professional body accreditation. Furthermore, we identify student perception of GenAI feedback and summative grading as an outstanding research question. These findings provide novel insight into AIEd, inform educators about relevant assessment strategies in the GenAI era, and may contribute to the development of assessment and feedback policies.
