Abstract

We report here for the first time fabrication and characterisation of long period fiber gratings with periods of several millimetres. The resonant loss peaks of these gratings are generated from the coupling of the forward propagating guided core mode to the cladding modes of fundamental and harmonic orders. These ultral-long-period fiber gratings may find some applications in optical fiber communication and sensing.
