AbstractSeven different ttypes of colonisation substrata samplers were compared with two direct sampling methods for sampling quantatitvely benthic macroinvertebrates of riffles and pools in the River Tean, Staffordshire. Differences were found in the species composition of the catches; in riffles the largest number of species was collected by cylinder sampling. In pools , colonisation substrata samplers were effective in collecting the most taxonomic groups.
