Abstract

The response of the isolated rat oesophagus to electrical stimulation and the effect of drugs and variations in both stimulation frequency and temperature on these responses were studied. Responses were recorded from the circular and longitudinal oesophageal muscles and the cardia. Both circular and longitudinal responses consisted of twitch and sustained components, the latter having an additional slow component. The twitch was decreased by shortening the interval between volleys; preceding each volley with a single stimulus or increasing the intralumenal volume. It is proposed that the relaxation phase of the twitch is due to mechanical changes in the muscularis externa and that it is 'fast' striated muscle...
