Hydroperoxides and olefinic unsaturation are formed rapidly in Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a consequence of mechanical shearing of the polymer chains during the processing operation. The concentration of these species in the polymer before processing is negligible compared with that produced mechano-chemically during processing.
