The tobacco and cigarette industry in Greece

Abstract

The objective of this study was to study the existing situation of tobacco industry in Greece, that is production and sale of tobacco, processing of tobacco leaves, tobacco manufacturing, and trading in tobacco products.

Greek tobacco is divided into two main categories that is the Oriental type and Barley. The tobacco of oriental type is divided into exportable tobacco (Basmas, Sampson, ete.) and into tobacco for domestic consumption (trembelia etc.). The quality is considered to be high because of the law content of nicotine. The cultivation of Burley tobacco started in Greece in 1960. The matters of tobacco concerning, cultivation, marketing and scientific research has been undertaken by the National Tobacco Organization and by the Tobacco Institute. Tobacco is the national product for Greece, since it is the main source of income of an importart part of rural population (1975 = 117 thousand cultivators) and the main exportable agricultural product (During 1974 tobacco exports correspond to 33% of agricultural product exports of the 9% on total exports of the country)...
