I am happy to take on new PhD students interested in various aspects of artificial intelligence research.

    Personal profile

    Biography

I am a Professor in Computer Science at Aston University, specialising in Artificial Intelligence. I am also Director of Research Degree Programmes in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

I joined Aston as a lecturer in Computer Science in January 2006. During my time at Aston, I served as Associate Dean for Postgraduate Programmes between Aug 2017- May 2020 and Head of Computer Science in the period Aug 2016- May 2017.

Previously, I held research positions at the Institute for Computer Science and Control, Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. At the same time I lectured in Artificial Intelligence at various levels for the Eötvös Loránd University and the Dennis Gábor University in Budapest.

Between 2001 and 2003 I was a lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham, where I lectured in Artificial Intelligence and Human Computer Interaction.

    Research Interests

My research interests are in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence Techniques. More specifically, I am interested in computational intelligence, theory and applications of genetic programming and evolutionary computation. I am also involved in evolutionary art, where the personal aesthetic preference is modelled and followed by evolutionary methods. Additionally, I am interested in data mining for engineering, design and health areas. More recently, I have started contributing to social learning and trust in AI.

    Teaching Activity

I am Programme Director for the MSc Artificial Intelligence and MSc Artificial Intelligence with Business Strategy programmes.

Currently I am teaching on a variety of Artificial Intelligence modules for BSc final year undergraduate and MSc students: Computational Intelligence at both BSc and MSc level, and Research Methods and Professional Practice at MSc level. I am also supervising BSc final year and MSc projects.

Previously I have taught modules on Computational Reasoning and Communication Skills, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Machine learning, Software Lifecycle and Design, Interaction Design at BSc level, Professional Skills in Computing at MSc level.
