Research interests

My current research interests include the formation and dynamics of coherent structures in turbulent flows. I have worked on turbulent flows in geophysical fluid dynamics; quantum fluids, such as superfluid helium-4 and Bose-Einstein condensates; and most recently optical turbulent flows in nonlinear optics. I also have a keen interest in wave turbulence (a theory for characterising the weakly nonlinear interaction of waves) and have produced many results for Kelvin waves in superfluids, solitary waves in optics, and most recently gravitational waves in cosmology.

  • 2019 (PI) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action: Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) grant, Hydrodynamical Approaches to Light Turbulence (HALT), value €294,000.
  • 2018 (PI) NVIDIA GPU Grant , value £1,500.
  • 2017 (PI) EPSRC-funded UK Fluids Network Special Interest Group (SIG) in Wave Turbulence, value £12,000.
  • 2012 (PI) HPC-Europa2 Transnational Access Grant, value £3,000.

Mathematics Tutorial Ambassadors

I am organiser for the Mathematics Tutorial Ambassador scheme whereby final year students are employed to support first-year tutotial classes in the mathematics group at Aston.

Big Bang Fair

I am the principle academic support for Aston University's mathematics contirbutions to the annual Big Bang Fair (the UK's largest science fair).
