General

I joined Aston University as a Teaching Fellow in 2000. Prior to this, I lived in Bologna, Italy and worked at the Universities of Parma and of Modena and Reggio Emilia where I taught academic English to students from a range of faculties, including economics, psychology, pharmacy and agricultural science.

I am an active member of the International TESOL Association and am currently Chair of the Standing Committee for Research. I am also a member of the Research Task Force, charged with identifying the agenda for TESOL research both within the association and the wider field.

My research interests are in the areas of language teacher education, particularly teacher beliefs, classroom discourse and language-in-education policy and its implementation. Together with Keith Richards (Warwick University), I am series editor of a major new book series called International Perspectives on ELT published by Palgrave Macmillan. The first volume, on motivation (edited by Ema Ushioda), was published in 2013. Volumes on ELT materials and teaching English to young learners are in press while future titles will include classroom research, teacher education, English as a lingua franca and classroom interaction.
