Abstract

Starting from the semantic description of aller and venir as motion verbs, this paper accounts for the general grammaticalisation process that has turned them into auxiliaries. It then provides an overview of the structures in which the two verbs work as auxiliaries: first, the aspectuo-temporal structures of imminence-ulteriority, proximal anteriority, illustrative, narrative, durative, passive and temporal sequence; secondly, the modal constructions of extraordinary, extreme and mitigation.
