Abstract

Transformer thermal modelling is the basis for dynamic asset rating (DAR) via which the asset life management of a transformer can potentially be optimised. This paper focusses on distribution network transformer dynamic rating, where modelling required parameters can be practically difficult to obtain. The IEC/IEEE models available for use with dynamic asset rating are discussed and ambiguous parameters are determined using measured load and weather data from a trial network area within Milton Keynes in the central area of the UK without the need to remove the transformer from service. This will improve modelling confidence and help the Network Operator realise dynamic network rating gains.
