Abstract

It has been known for some time that the excited state of the tris(2,2'-bipyridine) ruthenium (11) dication, Ru(blpy) 2+3, Is thermodynamically capable of facilitating the photochemical cleavage of water Into dihydrogen and dioxygen. Surfactant derivatives of Ru(blpy) 2+as monolayers 16 and contained on dispersed particles 36 have enabled the cleavage reaction, but irreproducibly.
