Dr Marina Bock is a Chartered Civil Engineer with the ICE that holds a PhD and a 5-year civil engineering degree from Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC Barcelona Tech) in Spain. During her PhD she investigated structural applications of ferritic stainless steel with funding from the research fund for coal and steel (RFCS) from the European Union (RFSR-CT-2010-00026, 91k€) and national funding from the Ministry of Revenue and Competitivity of Spain (BIA 2012-36373, 137k€). Her PhD research directly contributed to improved design methodologies of the design code for structural stainless steel, the EN 1993-1-4. During her PhD studies she also supported members of the evoluton group of EN 1993-1-4.
Upon completing her PhD studies in 2015, Dr Marina Bock worked in the UK industry for AECOM as a bridge engineer dealing with inspection, assessment and design of masonry bridges as well as other types of structures as part of the Northern Hub project, the construction of a new railway track in Manchester. She has also worked in Industrial R&D for Tata Steel UK developing steel products where she also contributted to the coordination and delivery of some work packages of project Bulding Active Steel Skin Envelope (BASSE), a project funded by RFCS of the European Union (RFSR-CT-2013-00026) that developed a cladding sandwich panel that harvests solar energy (£1.1M).
Dr Marina Bock joined the UK higher education in August 2017 when she started working as a lecturer in Civil Engineering for the University of Wolverhampton. In 2018 she secured internal competitive funding from the Early Research Award Scheme (ERAS) to develop more efficient deisgn guidelines for structural aluminium (£4,995). In 2019, she was awarded funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the scheme "Small Grants" to develop novel aluminium connections (£5,000). In 2020, she was awarded a Lord Paul Swaraj Fellowship from the University of Wolverhampton to investigate and assess the applicability of the EN 1999, the structural code for aluminium, to additive manufactured aluminium using AlSi10Mg metal powder (£10,000). In September 2023, she was awarded a Royal Society Research Grant (RGS\R2\222144) with a value of £20,000 to investigate structural applications of additive manufactured Al7075 high-strength aluminum, a non-standard metal powder. Also in September 2023 with a team of other academics and an SME based in Shropshire, SJH driwevays, she secured funding from Innovate UK under the Smart Grants scheme with a value of £434k to develop a UV reflective resin based paving thorugh which she acquired experience undertaking thermal imaging.
Dr Marina Bock has an outstanding track record of more than 30 peer reviewed journal and conference articles.
She also took two career breaks between December 2019 until April 2020 and between Novemebr 2022 and August 2023 to raise her family. During her breaks she supported projects and teaching activities as part of her "keep in touch days".
