    Biography

Sahar Al-Malaika is a Professor of Polymer Science at Aston University, specialising in antioxidant chemistry, polymer modification, oxidation/ageing, stabilisation and lifetime performance (first and subsequent lives).  Most of her professional career has been spent at Aston University where she leads the Polymer Processing and Performance Research Unit.

    Research Interests

    • Chemistry of polymers:  their processing, modification, oxidation (photo, thermal, bio) and stabilisation
    • Chemistry of antioxidants & additives in polymers - natural & from renewable resources, synthetic & novel non-migratory antioxidants:  synthesis, mechanisms and applications
    • Chemistry of vitamin E and its role in polymer applications including orthopaedic implants
    • Reactive processing, in-situ modification and functionalization of polymers
    • Lifetime performance of polymers including human-contact applications
    • Environmental aspects of plastics, recycling, biodegradability, compostability & upgrading performance of second-life polymer products
    • Polymers, Blends and Nanocomposites: processing, performance and stability under aggressive environments

    Teaching Activity

My teaching reflects my research interest, delivering modules in  polymer Science and Organic Chemistry to all the chemistry, chemical Engineering and CEAC programmes.  This involves lectures, tutorials, supervision of experimental research projects, literature projects, and polymer laboratory classes.
