Driving cycle approaches in characterising driving patterns

Abstract

This paper attempts to provide a comprehensive review of approaches to characterise driving patterns using driving cycles. To characterise driving patterns, researchers have employed many different approaches and assessment criteria in developing representative driving cycles. These approaches differ mainly in terms of three major components in the process of developing a driving cycle which are test route selection, data collection and cycle construction methods. Different approaches of developing a driving cycle have been critically analysed according to these three aspects. In particular, a comprehensive list of assessment criteria has been summarised. A number of recommendations are then made. To select a representative route for driving test, quantitative traffic data should be taken into account. For collecting speed data, chase car method, on-board measurement method or their hybrid can also be employed. Regarding cycle construction, random selection of driving periods to constitute the driving cycle is a more commonly used approach.
