Abstract

An erbium power amplifier is used to give a system launch power in excess of +20 dBm. In conjunction with an FSK modulation technique this allows unrepeatered transmission over 250 km of step-index fibre with a loss of 50 dB and a total dispersion of 3930 ps nm-1.
