    Biography

A Chartered Engineer and European Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Technological Product Designer, Lyndon is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) and a member of the IED Education and Training Committee. He has been the IED representative on the organising committee of the annual International Engineering & Product Design Education (E&PDE) Conference since 2010 for the IED and the Design Society. At Aston he is Programme Director for BSc Product Design and Technology, BSc Product Design and Management, and MSci Design, Enterprise and Innovation, and teaches across the product design and mechanical/design engineering courses. Lyndon holds several external examiner roles at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and is actively involved in IED course accreditations and professional reviews. He is currently co-editor of DATE: Design and Technology Education - An International Journal, which is published 3 times a year by the Design and Technology Association. He is currently supervising 2 PhDs in product design and has 5 completions as primary supervisor. In addition to current research work he is a member of the external advisory board for the EU Horizon 2020 and Indian DST funded PANIWATER project, working to provide clean drinking water in peri-urban India.

Principal Investigator PANIWATER Project EU Horizon 2020
    February 2019 - April 2020

PANIWATER (Photo-irradiation and Adsorption Novel Innovations for Water-treatment) is a joint EU-Indian funded project through the Horizon 2020 programme and Indian Department of Science & Technology (DST) which consists of 18 partners in 6 countries (Ireland, UK, Spain, Italy, Cyprus and India. The total budget is €5M over 4 years under H2020 Societal Challenge 5 (SC5) - climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials. The aim of the project is to develop a range of prototypes and technologies for the treatment of wastewater and drinking water to remove contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and other pollutants. Drinking water treatment technologies will include combined filtration, adsorption, UV-C LED treatment, a Solar Water Disinfection Transparent Jerrrycan, and electrocoagulation, oxidation, and disinfection (EOD). These prototypes will be deployed in peri-urban and rural areas in India. PANIWATER aims to work with end users on site with actions such as mapping CECs, removing CECs, health impact assessments, assessing social impacts of these interventions with the prototypes to invoke awareness for safe reuse of wastewater for irrigation, and preservation of potable water sources. PANIWATER technologies will have a significant potential market among the large rural population (60 million+) in India which heavily depends on agriculture, and communities highly vulnerable to risk of exposure to waterborne CECs.

    Funding Applications and Awards

Principal Investigator WATERSPOUTT Project EU Horizon 2020
    June 2016 - April 2020

WATERSPOUTT (Water – Sustainable Point-Of-Use Treatment Technologies) is an EU funded project through the Horizon 2020 programme which consists of 18 partners in 12 countries (Ireland, Malawi, Ethiopia, Uganda, South Africa, UK, Spain, Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Turkey). The total budget is €3.6M with an EU contribution of €3.1M over 4 years. The main aim of the project is to design, develop and then pilot solar based technologies for treating drinking water at the point of use. These will be piloted and assessed for their impact on waterborne disease in Malawi, Ethiopia, Uganda and South Africa.
