Life Extension of High Value Engineering Asset Based on Smart Condition Monitoring Manufacturers need to increase the availability of their engineering asset, in order to reduce unscheduled downtime and maximise the asset utilisation. This requires techniques managing maintenance and extending the asset’s life. Condition monitoring offers a predictive approach to asset maintenance, ensuring optimum asset performance while keeping downtime to a minimum. This PhD project will develop a system solution to predict the machine failure effectively and efficiently. You need to have a first class or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification in Mechatronics, Electronics Engineering, Computer Science to apply for this post. Knowledge/experience of condition monitoring, signal processing, data analysis, programming on Matlab or other professional software are preferred. General

Yuchun joined the Aston School of Engineering and Applied Science in July 2017. His main background is in manufacturing engineering, mechatronics, and life cycle engineering. Prior to Aston, Yuchun worked as a Lecturer in Manufacturing Division at Cranfield University. Before that, Yuchun worked as postdoctoral researcher in Queen’s University Belfast, Cardiff University in UK, and Tianjin University in China, respectively. Yuchun also worked in IT industry shortly in Shanghai, China before coming to UK in 2002.

Research Interests

Dr Xu’s research lies in the areas of Industry 4.0, Digital & Smart Manufacturing, Remanufacturing, Life Cycle Engineering, and Circular Economy. His research work are closely linked with industry, including Rolls-Royce, Airbus, and Network Rail etc.
